The International Ultra Trail “Wild River Vjosa” is an ambitious project that combines sport with cultural heritage along the pristine waters of the Vjosa River. Coordinated by Marathon Albania and supported by local municipalities including Gjirokastër, Çarshovë, Përmet, Këlcyrë, Memaliaj, and Tepelenë, this event aims to showcase the region’s natural beauty and historical significance. Participants can choose from a variety of race distances: an 11 km mini-marathon for those looking for a shorter experience, a 26 km half-marathon that offers more mileage along the riverfront, or one of three ultra-distance options ranging from 44 km to 100 km. Each route is designed to highlight different aspects of the Vjosa valley’s unique landscape and cultural sites. The longest distance, at 100 kilometers, traverses a diverse range of terrain including vineyards, meadows, and pine-covered hills. Runners will pass through picturesque villages like Çarshovë and Përmet, where they can enjoy local hospitality and regional cuisine. The trail also takes runners past the Qelova Church, offering stunning views and spiritual insights. The 67 km route is particularly notable for its gentle terrain and scenic vistas. It includes a passage through Këlcyrës Gorge, with rest stations every 5-7 kilometers providing essential hydration and sustenance. After crossing historic bridges like Peshtan and Dragot, the path leads to Memaliaj’s pine-covered hills before reaching Tepelenë's imposing fortress. Throughout the race, runners will encounter well-spaced footbridges that connect them with nearby highways while keeping them safely away from the strong currents of the Vjosa River. The trail is carefully planned to minimize impact on traffic and ensure a smooth experience for participants. In addition to athletic challenges, the event offers an educational element through detailed information about historical landmarks and cultural sites along the route. This blend of physical exertion with cultural immersion provides runners with a comprehensive understanding of Albania’s rich heritage and natural beauty. Organized by Marathon Albania in collaboration with local authorities, this trail marathon promises to be more than just a race—it is an invitation to explore and appreciate the unique character of the Vjosa valley.
