This year’s edition includes new course additions such as an Ultra race at historic James River State Park. Runners can choose from several challenging options including the full 50 mile solo run, relay races, or shorter but equally demanding trails like the night-time 10 Mile event. The park itself offers a diverse landscape with single and double track trails winding through scenic woodlands and alongside the picturesque James River.
The race has become an integral part of the local running community since its inception in Gladstone five years ago, drawing over three hundred participants annually who come to test their mettle on these challenging courses. The event not only promotes physical endurance but also contributes significantly to conservation efforts through partnerships with state park services and educational initiatives aimed at preserving Virginia’s natural heritage.
The course for the 10 mile loop begins near Canoe Landing campground, where runners encounter steep climbs early in the race followed by a flat section that parallels the historic James River. The trails are firm but slightly soft underfoot, providing good traction without excessive wear on shoes. Participants can expect to cover approximately 5 miles of hilly terrain before reaching flatter ground along the riverbank.
Weather conditions for April typically present firm and slightly soft trail surfaces with a UV index around moderate levels (5). Runners should be prepared for temperatures ranging between mild morning starts and warmer afternoons, as well as potential light rain showers. The race day forecast suggests clear skies but may include brief periods of cloud cover during the afternoon.
James River Trail Runs offers several distance options including 10 Miler, 50K Hiker, full 50Mile Solo Run, and various relay races such as a three-person team for the 50k. These events cater to both seasoned trail runners seeking new challenges and newcomers looking to experience the thrill of endurance running.
