KAXTRAIL: A Tribute to the Mountains and XabierRekarte "Kaxtel"
In 2026 on September 24, KAXTRAIL will take place in Erratzu (Baztan), offering a challenging mountain race of 45 kilometers over a total elevation gain of 3,000 meters. This unique and one-of-a-kind event is dedicated to those who love the mountains, providing an unforgettable experience for both seasoned runners and avid hikers alike. The race commemorates XabierRekarte "Kaxtel," celebrating the tenth anniversary since his passing.
The race was born in Erratzu: a community that has come together to honor its local hero. Its primary goal is to preserve Kaxtel's legacy, emphasizing respect for mountain culture, solidarity, and passion.
Participants have three options:
- The full 45-kilometer course offers the ultimate challenge for trail runners and hikers.
- A mid-distance option allows participants to experience half of this demanding route.
- An easier trekking path caters to those seeking a leisurely stroll through natural beauty, with opportunities to explore at their own pace.
