Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty and thrilling challenge of Doe Mountain Recreation Area for an unforgettable trail running experience at Tower above the Trail! Nestled just minutes from Mountain City, Tennessee, this USATF-sanctioned race offers a unique blend of diverse terrains and breathtaking views spanning three states. Participants can choose between 50K, 25K, or 13K distances. The longer courses feature two laps on a scenic loop that winds through the heart of Doe Mountain Recreation Area. With over 60 feet of elevation gain per mile in some sections, runners will encounter challenging climbs and descents throughout their journey. One highlight is the opportunity to conquer the historic Kettlefoot Fire Tower, standing tall at an impressive 60-foot height. Reaching its peak provides a panoramic view that stretches across Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina—a perfect reward for those pushing themselves through rugged terrain. Registration takes place exclusively on Ultrasignup; no paper registration will be available onsite. Entry fees cover facility use, aid stations along the route, post-race food, and a finisher award. T-shirts are an optional add-on to keep entry costs low. The event schedule kicks off with early packet pickup on Friday evening from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Doe Mountain Recreation Area's front porch. On race day, Saturday, June 5th, runners can check in and collect their packets between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM. The races begin promptly with the longer distances first: a 7:30 AM start for both the 25K and 50K courses. The shorter but equally scenic 13K race commences at 9:00 AM, offering participants an afternoon finish by 1:00 PM. Volunteers are essential to this event's success and will be rewarded with a t-shirt and post-race refreshments, in addition to the heartfelt gratitude of all involved. Lodging options abound near Doe Mountain Recreation Area, including short-term rentals via VRBO or AirBNB within Johnson County, as well as camping on DMRA property by prior arrangement.
