Kismet Cliff Run

About the Event

Kismet Cliff Run: A Skyrunning Spectacle Amidst New Hampshire's White Mountains
Every September, runners from across the nation converge on the rugged beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains for the Kismet Cliff Run. This year marks a special return to the US Skyrunner Series after a seven-year hiatus, making it an essential event in the global skyrunning calendar. The series includes four races stretching from Alaska to New Hampshire and is administered by the International Skyrunning Federation.
The Kismet Cliff Run offers two challenging courses: the Beast of the East Half-Marathon and Little Beast 5 Miler. Both routes are known for their steep, technical terrain and breathtaking views above treeline. Participants must be prepared for exposure to any weather conditions during these races.
For those seeking a shorter yet equally demanding experience, the Little Beast course winds through Cathedral and Whitehorse Ledges, featuring twisting double track that transitions into challenging single-track trails. Runners will face two tough ascents before descending miles of Conway granite with Echo Lake State Park’s scenic beauty as their backdrop.
The Beast of the East Half-Marathon takes runners on a 13-mile loop over North Moat Mountain via the incredible Red Ridge, offering stunning views of the Presidential Range and beyond. This route includes an impressive 2,000-foot climb that tests both physical and mental endurance. With over 4,300 feet of elevation gain, this half-marathon is considered one of the toughest in North America.
Logistics for these races are carefully planned to ensure a smooth experience despite the challenging terrain. Staggered start times minimize congestion on the trails: the Beast of the East begins at 8 AM and Little Beast follows shortly after at 8:15 AM. Aid stations are strategically placed along both courses, with water-only stops available for hydration.
Participants are advised to bring essential gear like a hydration vest, food supplies, medical kits, and rain/wind jackets due to unpredictable weather conditions in the mountains. Trekking poles are permitted but must be used only after passing the second aid station at 4.1 miles on the half-marathon route.
The Kismet Cliff Run not only challenges runners with its technical terrain but also rewards them with unparalleled views of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, making it a unique and unforgettable experience for skyrunning enthusiasts from around the world.
