The Lake Mohegan Trail Race returns to Fairfield, Connecticut on April 24th, bringing its fifth year of exclusive women's-only racing opportunities along the scenic trails surrounding Lake Mohegan. This event is dedicated to highlighting and promoting trail running specifically for female athletes as well as non-binary runners in a supportive community environment. Participants can expect to run through various terrain types that cater equally to beginners looking to test their skills on natural surfaces, as well as seasoned trail runners seeking an engaging challenge.
On the morning of April 24th, runners will gather at Lake Mohegan Park located off Morehouse Highway in Fairfield for a day filled with picturesque views and challenging routes. The atmosphere is anticipated to be cool but comfortable, typical for early spring mornings when temperatures range from mild to chilly around sunrise. With firm yet slightly soft trail conditions underfoot, the race offers an ideal setting for testing endurance while appreciating the natural beauty of the park.
Since its inception in 2018, this event has grown steadily each year with a focus on inclusivity and empowerment within women’s athletics. The Lake Mohegan Trail Race aims to raise awareness about trail running opportunities available specifically for females and non-binary individuals who might not otherwise explore these activities due to lack of representation or tailored events. Over 200 runners are expected this year, making it one of the most popular trail races in Fairfield County.
The course at Lake Mohegan Park is a mix of gently rolling hills and smooth paths through mature forest areas adjacent to open fields overlooking the lake itself. It includes several stretches where the elevation changes moderately but comfortably for those who enjoy hilly terrain interspersed with flat, runnable sections along well-defined trails. For participants in both 10K and the 4-hour endurance challenge event, this means looping back through these varied landscapes multiple times to complete their distances.
Weather conditions on race day will likely feature clear skies during morning hours transitioning into partly cloudy afternoons as temperatures climb from around 6°C early in the morning up to a high of approximately 15°C by midday. UV levels are expected at moderate intensity, suggesting runners wear protective clothing or sunscreen and stay hydrated throughout their run.
