About the Event

The Hardy County Gravel Spectacle: Saturday, August 15, 2026 at 9 AM
Experience the breathtaking landscapes and challenging terrain as you participate in the Hardy County Gravel Spectacle. This unique gravel race, organized by the Lost River Trails Coalition, will take place on August 15, 2026, and is set to be an unforgettable event for all participants.
Registration opens on Christmas Day 2025 at a special early bird rate of $65; rates increase to $85 on January 2 and reach $100 by the race date. The route will traverse through Hardy County's stunning scenery, offering both novice and seasoned cyclists an exhilarating challenge.
The event supports the development of multi-use and mountain biking trails in Lost River State Park while also benefiting Cryptids, Hardy County’s NICA youth mountain bike team. Inspired by Jay Moglia, a key figure behind Raw Talent Ranch and the Lost River Trails Coalition, this race aims to honor his legacy through an array of challenging yet picturesque roads.
Designed for cyclists with gravel bikes featuring low gearing and tires at least 38mm wide, the event is part of the West Virginia Gravel Series. Qualifying in various categories can earn participants additional cash or prizes; a $5 surcharge applies if you wish to compete across multiple routes within this series.
The main route spans an impressive 85 miles with over 8,500 feet of elevation gain, offering diverse terrains and breathtaking views. The medium route is approximately 60 miles long with about 6,000 feet of climbing, providing a more manageable yet still challenging experience for all categories.
For those looking for something shorter but equally thrilling, the Cove Mountain Loop offers a 28-mile circuit filled with scenic beauty and rewarding climbs. Aid stations will be strategically placed every 25 miles to ensure you stay hydrated and fueled throughout your journey.
Aid Stations
- Mile 25: Northern Squirrel Gap Road (Medium & Long Routes)
- Mile 43: Grassy Lick Community Center, Kirby (Long Route Only)
- Mile 61: Red's Broken Spoke, Baker (Long & Medium Routes)
- Mile 78: Lost River Barn (Long Route), Mile 53: Lost River Barn (Medium Route)
A minimalistic setup will be provided at each station, including water, HEED by Hammer Nutrition, Coke, and various snacks such as pretzels, chips, trail mix, peanut butter and jelly, fruit, pickles, and more.
Participants can expect a post-ride meal and party at the Mathias Community Center. Traditional Hardy County pit chicken BBQ prepared by the Mathias Community Center will be served alongside vegetarian options from South Branch Smokehouse and Drifter's Cafe wraps. Additional meal tickets are available for $20 each.
Safety measures include mandatory bicycle helmets, with two full bottles recommended due to potential heat exposure on race day. Transfers can be made until August 14 at 5 PM; after this date, changes must be communicated directly to the registration table before departure time.
Accommodations are plentiful in nearby hotels and bed and breakfasts such as Lost River State Park cabins, Guesthouse Lost River, South Branch Inn, Big Ridge Campground, or through Hardy County Convention and Visitors Bureau for more options.
