The Mainely Gravel ride is an inclusive cycling event that caters to all levels, challenging riders on a diverse route through rolling hills and varied terrain. The course features both gravel roads—suitable for road bikes with 30+mm tires or gravel bikes—and dirt roads, which can vary due to weather conditions. This year, participants have two options: the Long Course at 58 miles and the Short Course covering 35 miles until mile 25. At that point, Short Course riders head home while Long Course competitors complete a 20-mile loop before returning for the final 7 miles with their counterparts. Race day begins early on Pineland Farms’ Oak Hill field, adjacent to the parking lot. Riders gather here and line up according to their preferred riding style—race pace, casual ride, or adventure mode. The mass start at 10:00 AM is marked by a neutral lead car guiding riders down Route 231 before turning onto Doughty Road. Post-race festivities include food, drink, and live music provided by local bands. Awards are presented for both course lengths across various divisions. Timing services are managed by Eleven 11 Timing, ensuring accurate results and smooth operations. Pineland Farms offers more than just the race; families can enjoy hikes or runs on its trails while spectators wait their turn to ride. The Pineland Farms Deli provides lunch options available through registration, alongside restrooms conveniently located near the Oak Hill field parking lot. Safety is a priority throughout the event. Participants are reminded to follow road rules and be cautious of blind corners and rolling hills where visibility might be limited. Road crossings require stopping and checking for oncoming traffic before proceeding. Downeast Racing supports Independence Association (IA) through donations, contributing $5 from each registration towards programs that assist adults and children with disabilities in achieving full community inclusion. Since 1960, IA has provided supervised independent living homes, work training, physical fitness activities, and social support to enhance the lives of its clients. Mainely Gravel has raised over $11,000 for IA through participant generosity, making a significant impact on the Midcoast Maine community. The event not only challenges riders but also fosters camaraderie among participants and supports local organizations dedicated to inclusion and independence.
