The Meall a Bhuachaille Hill Race, organized by Scottish Athletics and licensed under Scottish Hill Runners, is set to take place on Saturday, September 26th, 2026. This challenging race will start at Badaguish Outdoor Centre near Aviemore, offering runners an exhilarating journey through the rugged terrain of Scotland's highlands. Registration opens from 12:30 PM in the main hall at Badaguish Outdoor Centre and a pre-race briefing is scheduled for 1:50 PM. The race begins promptly at 2:00 PM with participants embarking on a 13km route that climbs to an impressive elevation of 720 meters. The course takes runners through diverse landscapes, starting from Badaguish (grid reference NH 967114) along forest tracks and hill paths. The first major climb leads up the slopes of Meall a Bhuachaille at 810m before descending to a bealach checkpoint where competitors must follow a rough path leading southward towards Creagan Gorm, which stands at an elevation of 732 meters. From there, runners will traverse along the ridge to Craiggowrie (687m) and then make their way down through boggy heather terrain back into the forest. The race concludes with a final descent on familiar tracks leading directly back to Badaguish Outdoor Centre. Competitors should be prepared for variable weather conditions; in case of adverse conditions, organizers reserve the right to modify routes or cancel sections deemed unsafe. Essential kit includes full waterproof clothing, hat and gloves, whistle, compass, and map—kit checks will ensure all participants are adequately equipped before race day. Prize giving is anticipated around 4:30 PM with awards for open male and female categories as well as junior divisions (18-20 years), plus team events and specific age groups. Non-binary competitors may enter the relevant 'open' category based on their preference. To minimize environmental impact, carpooling or using eco-friendly transportation is encouraged; a £5 parking fee will be applied per vehicle upon arrival at Badaguish Outdoor Centre where limited registration spots are available for those who prefer to sign up in person. Maps and refreshments can also be purchased during the event but runners should plan accordingly as no showers will be permitted. This race promises not only physical challenge but also breathtaking views, making it a must-attend for any serious hill runner looking to test their skills against Scotland's natural beauty.
