Mount Diablo Challenge 2026 - presented by Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club

Climb to the summit of one of California’s most iconic peaks at the 43rd Mt. Diablo Challenge presented by the Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club, set for Sunday, October 4, 2026. This unique event invites cyclists from all walks of life and skill levels to tackle an exhilarating 11.2-mile ascent up South Gate Road, culminating at the summit’s remarkable elevation of 3,249 feet.
The ride begins early in the morning with a car-free climb that offers unparalleled safety for participants as they ascend through winding roads leading to breathtaking views stretching from the Farallon Islands to the Sierra Nevada mountains. Cyclists will be grouped into waves based on their predicted finish time, ensuring each rider has ample space and an optimal climbing experience.
Upon reaching the summit, cyclists are treated to a mini-celebration complete with refreshments before descending in escorted groups back down South Gate Road. The event concludes at Monte Vista High School where participants can enjoy a hearty lunch, complimentary beverages (excluding beer), vendor booths showcasing cycling gear and accessories, and live music for an afternoon of camaraderie.
In preparation for the challenge, cyclists are encouraged to join weekly rides organized by the Valley Spokesmen Bicycle Club. These include Wednesday morning climbs starting at St. Timothy's Church and Sunday rides known as the Brisk Bunch ride from Athenian School on Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd., providing ample opportunities to acclimate to the mountain’s terrain.

On event day, participants should arrive early at Monte Vista High School located at 3131 Stone Valley Road in Danville, CA. This year’s edition of the Mount Diablo Challenge also features a special event jersey collaboration with Voler, offering participants an exclusive range including Classic and Pro jerseys in various styles designed to enhance your climbing experience. Bragging rights are up for grabs as well, among multiple age categories such as King and Queen of the Mountain awards.
