About the Event

Experience the exhilarating ascent to Mount Greylock's peak at the annual Hill Climb Time Trial, presented by Northampton Cycling Club. This September 12, 2026, race offers an unforgettable journey through Massachusetts’s rugged terrain and stunning landscapes.
Starting from Western Gateway Heritage State Park in North Adams, participants will pedal their way up to New England's highest point at 3491 feet above sea level. The climb is structured as a time trial, ensuring that each rider faces the challenge alone on the road, with no drafting allowed. This format promises intense competition and personal bests.
The route features approximately 2860 vertical feet of climbing over a distance of about 5 miles, maintaining an average grade of 5.9%. The initial ascent is steep, reaching up to 9% in some sections, before easing slightly towards the summit. Riders will navigate through dense forests and enjoy breathtaking views of the valley below as they reach mile 5.4, where the climb becomes less strenuous but still demanding.
The race starts at 8:30 AM with a window until 10:00 AM for registration times, allowing participants to choose their ideal start time based on their anticipated finish and return timing. The event concludes by noon, providing ample opportunity for celebration in the afterparty hosted near the base of Mount Greylock.
For those who need it, Bascom Lodge offers cozy accommodations at the summit, complete with hotel-like private rooms or coed bunk beds, along with delicious dining options. Nearby lodging choices like Hotel Downstreet and The Williams Inn provide comfortable stays closer to North Adams for easy access on race day.
Registration is available through August 17th for $80 per rider (with a reduced fee of $20 for those under 18). Full-time students can take advantage of the greylockstudent2026 code, saving $40 off their registration. NCC members receive an additional discount by logging into their member page.
Participants will enjoy refreshments at the summit and a post-race afterparty with catering services, including beer starting around 11:00 AM and food approximately half an hour later. The awards ceremony is scheduled for just before noon.
Remember to transport your gear up to the summit if needed; you can also look forward to an impressive Greylock T-shirt upon completion of this challenging climb.

North Adams is a town of 13,000 people (2020) in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. In the 19th century it was the industrial center of the region. Old factory buildings are now being recycled to other uses, including the new Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. The town's rail access was improved by one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century, the Hoosac Tunnel. North Adams is chock-full of interesting historic houses, only a few of which are pictured in this article.
