The 33rd Annual Mountain Mist is one of the Southeast's oldest and largest trail runs, offering runners an exhilarating journey through Monte Sano State Park and North Alabama’s Huntsville Land Trust Trails. This challenging course features rugged terrain with rocky single-track trails, steep climbs, and muddy creek crossings that test even the most seasoned endurance athletes. Starting at 7:00 AM on January 23, 2027, runners will navigate through Monte Sano State Park's rock walls, stone cuts, sinkholes, and a descent to the mountain’s base. The route then ascends via Oak Park before tackling the infamous Waterline Trail, where upper body strength is crucial for negotiating steep sections. The final stretch of 6 miles winds through McKay Hollow, known for its rugged trails that challenge even the most experienced runners. With an elevation gain of approximately 4,300 feet and strict time limits enforced at five checkpoints along the way, this race demands careful pacing and strategic navigation to ensure a successful finish by the 4:30 PM deadline. Registration closes on January 16th with no refunds or deferrals allowed once registered. Participants must pick up their packets in person either on Friday from 12pm-8pm at Monte Sano Lodge, or Saturday morning before race start between 5:30am and 6:30am. Runners can expect a variety of weather conditions ranging from cold winter mornings to mild spring days. The course is meticulously maintained but remains unyieldingly challenging, making the Mountain Mist an unforgettable experience for trail running enthusiasts seeking adventure in Alabama's scenic mountains.
