The Black Mountain Marathon & Mount Mitchell Challenge returns for its highly anticipated run on April 3, 2027, following the cancellation of previous editions due to Hurricane Helene. This thrilling race offers runners two distinct challenges: an exhilarating marathon and a breathtaking summit-to-summit trek. Runners will gather at dawn in Black Mountain, known as the "front porch of Western North Carolina," for both events. The Mount Mitchell Challenge begins with a 36-mile journey that takes participants from this charming town to the peak of Mount Mitchell, standing tall at an elevation of 6,684 feet—America's highest point east of the Mississippi River—and back again. This grueling route features nearly 4,500 feet of ascent and descent, making it a true test for endurance runners. Marathon participants will start alongside their Challenge counterparts but diverge from them at mile 13 when they reach Black Mountain Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway. At this point, Marathoners turn back towards Lake Tomahawk while Mount Mitchell Challengers continue to conquer the summit. The marathon course offers a more moderate elevation gain of about 3,000 feet. Both races are meticulously organized with safety as top priority. Runners will enjoy professional chip timing and well-stocked aid stations along the way. Upon crossing the finish line at Lake Tomahawk in Black Mountain, participants can look forward to receiving a quarter-zip technical long sleeve shirt, a wooden finisher medal, and a stylish trucker hat. The post-race festivities include complimentary beer tickets for those 21 years of age or older, as well as an award ceremony celebrating the top performers. The Challenge awards $750 in cash prizes to the first five male, female, and non-binary winners, plus custom pottery trophies for masters category finishers (40+). Marathon runners also receive generous prize money—$600 total across all categories—with custom pottery awards for their achievements. Registration opens on August 1, 2026. Runners can pick up packets early at various locations in Asheville and Black Mountain leading up to the race day. On April 3rd, packet pickup will be available from 6 AM until the start of the races at 7 AM. The post-race party is scheduled for 7:30 PM. Participants are required to carry a vessel that can hold at least 20 ounces of water or other fluids, along with a rain shell and cellphone throughout their journey. Gear checks will be conducted on race morning and at aid stations to ensure compliance. With stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and an unforgettable finish line celebration, this event promises to leave runners with memories that last far beyond the final strides across the finish line.
