Mt. Takakoshi Hill Climb 2026 - The Challenge to Awa Fuji Okoottsan (Mt.高越ヒルクライム2026 ～阿波富士おこおっつぁんへの挑戦～)
About the Event
Mt. Takakoshi rises 1,133 m in Yamakawa, Yoshinogawa, and is known as Awa Fuji for its elegant shape and by locals as Okoottsan. One of Tokushima's leading mountains, it draws hikers and climbers with its views. Near the summit, the Funakubo Azalea Park holds onitsutsuji azaleas, some over 400 years old and up to 6 meters tall, designated a national natural monument. The summit also has the Takakoshi-ji temple of the Shingon Daikakuji school, said to have been founded by the ascetic En no Ozuno. It was once ranked with Yoshino as a training ground for the Shugendo mountain faith, and legend tells of a great tengu that served the deity enshrined at the peak. Japanese serows may also be spotted near the top. The organizers chose a bicycle hill climb race to share the mountain with more people. The course is 13.2 km with 920 m of elevation gain, an average gradient of 7.3% and a maximum of 17.1%, a severe challenge at the level of a hors categorie climb. It leads to the summit once sought by ascetics testing themselves. Categories cover men by age group from 18 to 60 and over, women, a heavyweight class for riders 85 kg and over, high school classes and an e-bike division.
