REGISTRATION – Online registration for the Last Man Standing  is now open through an hour before race time on Saturday, March 21

Online registration is available at the NavajoYES website: www.navajoyes.org   Please contact us if you have need for a hardship discount or the local/native runner discount for registration.

LOCATION – Shonto Marketplace Trailhead – Jct Hwy 160 and Hwy 98 (across Highway 160 from the Shell gas station.

COURSE – The race will be run on the Rail-Trail Route, which is primarily a dirt path.  There are some sandy sections on the route, and a short rocky section near the turnaround point.

Runners will alternate running east of the Start/Finish and west of the Start/Finish. To start the race runners will run just over two (2) miles east from the Start/Finish area, and then return the same route back to the venue.  Runners will alternate with a 2+ miles route to the west and return to the Start/Finish..

It is recommended that you develop a plan to meet your energy and hydration needs. There will also be local live music at the Start/Finish area to keep you motivated.

THE “LAST MAN” EVENT RULES – Here is how a Last Man/Woman event works.

Beginning at 7:00 a.m., all runners line up at the Start Line to begin their first 4-mile segment.  They have one hour to complete the 4 miles.  As long as a runner returns to the Finish Line under one hour, they can line up at the Start Line at 8:00 a.m. to begin their second 4-mile segment.  If they finish under one hour, they line up again at 9:00 a.m. for their third segment, and so on.

If runners fail to complete a segment in under one hour or if they simply opt to not begin the next segment, they are no longer in the competition.

If there is more than one runner remaining at the start of the 25th lap, the first runner to complete that lap will be declared the winner.   There will be no more than 25 laps in the event, measuring a 100-mile total.

RACE CAMP – The Start/Finish area will include a well-stocked aid station.  Runners may set up a camp area with chair, table, their personal kit, extra shoes, etc. that will be accessible at the completion of each segment.  They may use whatever time they have been the time that they finish a segment until the top of the hour when the next segment begins.

AID STATION – There will be one major aid station at the Start/Finish, providing hydration, medical support and a variety of nutrition.  Available foods will include an assortment of the following: Honey Stinger energy gels and waffles, Gatorade, salty snacks, pickles/juice, coffee/tea, fresh fruit and sweet snacks.  In addition, runners will have access to Nutella wraps, sandwiches, hummus wraps, broth, turkey + cheese wraps, and PBJs, among other food items.

TOILETS & TRASH – There will be a portable toilet on the Start/Finish.  Please use common backcountry etiquette if using the restroom elsewhere. There will be trash bags for small items.

PACKET PICK-UP – Packet pick-up will take place at the start line beginning at 6:00 a.m.

This is a cup-less event so please plan to have a hand-held bottle or hydration pack for use throughout the day.  The main aid station at the start/finish area will have ample supplies of drinks – Gatorade, water, hot tea, coffee, sparkling water, Coke, Ginger Ale and Drip Drop.

AWARDS – There are overall awards for the last man and final woman finishers.

PACERS – Pacers may join their runner after mile 20.

WEATHER – The average high temps for March is in the mid to high 50’s, with an average low temps in the low-30’s.  The weather in the high desert is variable and early spring weather, wind, rain and even snow are possible, as are much more mild conditions.

LODGING – The closest hotels for race weekend are in Kayenta (33 miles east of the race venue), Tuba City (40 miles west) and Page (70 miles north).  There is an excellent campground at Navajo National Monument, 23 miles northeast of the venue.
