Experience the thrill of NICA Discovery, designed for young cyclists aged 7 to 11 who are ready to take their skills off-road. This introductory program is perfect for kids with some neighborhood or urban riding experience but have never ventured into more challenging terrains. NICA Discovery meets every Monday at Edgeley Park from July 6th through August 10th, starting at 5:30 pm. All adult leaders are carefully vetted and hold coaching licenses, ensuring a safe environment for your child to learn and grow. Each session is equipped with first aid trained personnel on site. Participants must arrive prepared with the right gear—bring a helmet that fits snugly (especially if under five), closed-toe shoes, and a bike with knobby tires, gears, and two hand brakes. Tire size should be at least 20 inches for safety reasons. Additionally, bring along a small backpack to carry water and snacks; non-caffeinated sports drinks or plain water are recommended. At each session, your child will engage in three main parts: opener activities setting expectations, skills development through games, and a wrap-up reflection period. A mid-session break allows time for hydration and snack breaks amidst the fun-filled learning environment. The park-like setting offers a safe space to explore, with rides confined within designated areas close to restroom facilities and support. Each lesson builds on the previous one, so regular attendance is key to maximizing your child's experience. Encourage them to come ready to learn, play, ride, and discover new trails! Remember, every rider must sign a waiver and medical release form before participating. You can find more details about required documentation online at bikereg.com or in person during the first session. For additional comfort and safety, consider bringing gloves for hand protection, eye wear to shield from dust and bugs, and a light rain jacket due to changing weather conditions throughout the season. Athletic shorts are also recommended but not mandatory. NICA Discovery is all about fostering a love for cycling while building essential skills in a supportive setting. Your child will be part of an engaging community that celebrates growth and exploration on two wheels.
