Welcome to NICA Discovery, an exciting program designed for young cyclists who are eager to explore the world of mountain biking! Our dedicated adult leaders, all background-checked and certified by NICA with current first aid training, ensure that every session is both safe and enjoyable. NICA Discovery Glendale, WI meets at Kletzsch Park Pavilion on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 PM to 7 PM. Sessions run through July, starting from the 13th until the 29th of the month. To join this program, participants must be able to ride a bike without training wheels and should have reached at least 7 years old by the start date. Registration is handled via BikeReg online or in person where parents need to review and sign a code of conduct with their child for the first session. A signed waiver and medical release form are also required, which can be found here. Essential equipment includes a helmet that fits securely—less than 5 years old works best. Closed-toe shoes secured by laces or straps ensure safety during rides. Bikes should have knobby tires, gears, and two hand brakes with at least a 20-inch tire size. A replacement tube for the bike’s tire is needed and can be dropped off on day one. A small backpack that fits snugly around your child's body will help them carry water and snacks throughout sessions. Kids should always bring non-caffeinated sports drinks or water, along with some easy-to-store treats like granola bars or fruit snacks. Additional recommended gear includes full-finger gloves for hand protection, generic sports glasses to shield against dust and bugs, a windbreaker or rain jacket in case of weather changes, and loose athletic pants. While not mandatory, cycling-specific shorts can make the experience more comfortable. Each session is structured into three parts: opener activities setting objectives, skills-building games, and reflection time. Mid-session breaks allow for snacks and hydration checks while ensuring safety discussions are part of every ride. Sessions take place in a park-like environment rather than on trails, making them accessible to beginners who have some neighborhood or urban riding experience but may be new to off-road cycling. The program focuses on teaching fundamental skills like balance, pedaling, and basic bike handling before moving onto more advanced techniques as the season progresses. Kids should come prepared with their gear, ready to learn, play, ride, and explore. A small backpack that fits just enough essentials is perfect for carrying water bottles, snacks, and any treasures they might find during their adventure. For those unsure about bike sizing, a guide provided by NICA can help determine the correct fit based on age and inseam length. This ensures every child has the best experience possible as we journey through our sessions together! Join us at Kletzsch Park Pavilion this summer for an unforgettable cycling experience!
