Join the Chicago Canicross Club on November 14, 2026, at Deer Grove-East Picnic Grove #4 in Palatine, Illinois, for the Nikki Cozzi-Carso Scholarship Fund NCCS 5K. This event welcomes runners, walkers, and canicross enthusiasts to participate alongside their furry companions. The race course offers a scenic 5K trail with an option for those preferring paved paths. Whether you're aiming for personal bests or just out enjoying the morning air, there's room at the starting line for everyone. All proceeds from this event will support the Nikki Cozzi-Carso Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to local Catholic school students and honors Nikki’s legacy of academic excellence, compassion, and community service. Participants who register by October 1st can secure a race t-shirt while supplies last. The day promises more than just running; post-race refreshments will be available for all attendees as well as an array of activities that foster camaraderie among the community. Awards are given to top finishers, both human and canine. In recognition of November being Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, race participants are encouraged to wear purple in support of those affected by this disease. Canicross enthusiasts should ensure they have appropriate gear for their dogs before joining: a canicross belt that distributes pulling force safely; a bungee line with shock absorption properties; and a sport-specific harness designed not to restrict breathing or movement. Standard leashes are prohibited, but dog-friendly options exist without the need for specialized equipment. Race day will also see various sponsors present, including North American Canicross, Kenosha Running Company, Howling Dog Alaska MOJO Dog Co., Berryman Equipment, and Bancare, each contributing to making this event possible. So lace up your shoes or gear up with your dog, and come out for a morning of exercise, community spirit, and supporting an important cause. About Palatine

A palatine, or palatinus, is a high-level official attached to imperial or royal courts in Europe since Roman times. The term palatinus was first used in Ancient Rome for chamberlains of the Emperor due to their association with the Palatine Hill. The imperial palace guard, after the rise of Constantine I, were also called the Scholae Palatinae for the same reason. In the Early Middle Ages the title became attached to courts beyond the imperial one; one of the highest level of officials in the papal administration were called the judices palatini. Later the Merovingian and Carolingian dynasties had counts palatine, as did the Holy Roman Empire. Related titles were used in Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, the German Empire, and the County of Burgundy, while England, Ireland, and parts of British North America referred to rulers of counties palatine as palatines.
