Nordenskiöldsloppet, now entering its tenth modern iteration, invites skiers to traverse the untamed wilderness above the Arctic Circle on a historic route that dates back to 1884. This challenging race was originally conceived by polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld as an endurance test for expedition members. Today, it stands as the world's longest ski competition at an impressive 220 kilometers. The event kicks off early in the morning on March 19th at precisely 5:00 AM and participants have a full 30 hours to complete the course. The route winds through breathtaking landscapes from Jokkmokk, passing through Granudden twice before reaching Njavve and Purkijaur, ultimately returning back to Jokkmokk. Feeding stations are strategically placed along the entire track, offering essential energy refills in the form of sport drinks, snacks like energy bars and gels, as well as warm meals such as pasta and meat soup at select locations. Additional clothing can be transported to Bälkasgårrå (visited twice) and Njavve for those who need it. Participants are encouraged to bring a headlamp, hydration belt, and tight-fitting sunglasses to ensure optimal performance in the challenging conditions. Skiers must adhere to classic technique throughout the race, which is open to both elite competitors and amateur enthusiasts alike. The top three finishers will receive significant prize money: 50,000 SEK for first place, 30,000 SEK for second, and 20,000 SEK for third. Both male and female winners are also awarded a challenge cup donated by the Nordenskiöld family. A special historical achievement is recognized with a unique medal given to all participants who complete the race in under 21 hours and 22 minutes—the time set by Pavva Lasse Nilsson Tuorda back in 1884. Organizers ensure that medical personnel are on standby throughout, ready to intervene if any participant's health is at risk. For those unable to finish, transportation back to Jokkmokk via snowmobiles and minibuses is provided. Travel arrangements include shuttle bus services from Luleå Airport to Jokkmokk on race weekend, making it convenient for visitors to reach the starting line. Detailed information about travel options can be found online or through event organizers. Nordenskiöldsloppet promises an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and athletic challenge, offering a rare opportunity for skiers to test their limits in one of Sweden's most pristine environments.
