Embark on an epic adventure along the rugged Yorkshire coastline and through its enchanting woodlands with the Whitby Abbey Lands Walk, a 50-mile journey that challenges both body and spirit. Participants have up to 24 hours to complete this grueling yet rewarding course, which features over 6,000 feet of elevation gain. The event kicks off at Grouse Hill Caravan Park, where you'll find ample parking space along with a variety of accommodation options nearby. Registration begins promptly at 4:30 AM, and the walk commences at dawn at 5:00 AM. The route takes you through breathtaking landscapes from the moment you leave Grouse Hill. Your journey starts by heading to Ravenscar where you'll join The Cleveland Way, a renowned trail that winds along stunning coastal paths past Robin Hood's Bay before reaching Whitby itself. After passing through Sandsend, the course turns inland into Mulgrave Woods, offering respite in the form of lush greenery and peaceful trails. From there, it’s an ascent to Grosmont followed by a climb onto Sleights Moor and Breckon Howe. The terrain becomes more challenging as you traverse Whinstone Ridge, York Cross, and Lilla Cross before entering Langdale Forest. Here, you'll follow Jugger Howe Beck back towards Grouse Hill, completing the loop with a sense of accomplishment. While primarily designed for walkers, runners are welcome to join in at their own pace, though checkpoint opening times will be set based on an average speed limit of 4 miles per hour to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort throughout the day. The event is organized by Kathy, Den, and Len, dedicated local guides who have led many crossings of The Lyke Wake Walk. Their expertise ensures that participants are well-prepared for this unique challenge. They provide comprehensive support through a WhatsApp group where you can connect with fellow walkers before the big day. In addition to enjoying an unforgettable experience, registrants also have the option to purchase XCover insurance, allowing them peace of mind in case they need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. Join us and immerse yourself in Yorkshire’s natural beauty while pushing your limits on this remarkable 50-mile journey. This event promises not just a physical challenge but an enriching experience that celebrates the spirit of exploration and camaraderie.
