Experience the stunning landscapes of Western Maine as you pedal through its rugged terrain. This year, the Northwoods Gravel Grind returns with an exhilarating 35-mile route and more challenging distances to suit advanced cyclists. As one of the longest-running gravel events in the state, this race offers a unique blend of natural beauty and competitive spirit. The event kicks off at 8:00 am on its specified day, though organizers reserve the right to adjust start times based on weather conditions or other factors. The exact course details will be finalized by mid-summer, ensuring participants face fresh challenges each year. Prepare for a hilly journey that showcases Maine's diverse and breathtaking scenery. Throughout your ride, you'll encounter rest stops where you can refuel with water, energy bars, or simply take a moment to catch your breath. After crossing the finish line, join fellow cyclists at Saddleback for post-race festivities featuring food, prizes, and camaraderie. Prizes will be awarded to top male and female participants in each category—top three positions only. The event is rain-or-shine, with non-refundable registration fees that come with a mandatory waiver. Participants must wear helmets at all times and should bring their own tools, parts, and nutrition supplies due to limited support on the course. The Northwoods Gravel Grind takes place under a special use permit from Seven Islands Land Management, allowing access to private roads not typically open to public traffic. This unique setting ensures an authentic cycling experience amidst Maine's natural beauty. Cyclists can choose between cyclocross or gravel grind bikes, with 28c wide tires recommended for durability against the challenging terrain. No tri-bars or aero bars are allowed. Limited support will be available at one or two aid stations along the course. For those seeking overnight accommodations, Rangeley Lake State Park and Cupsuptic Lake Campground offer close proximity to the starting line. Alternatively, there's a range of lodging options from basic camping sites to full-service hotels and cottages, ensuring everyone finds their perfect spot before the race day. Remember, safety is paramount: follow all traffic rules, yield to other road users, and ride single file where necessary. The event officials encourage responsible behavior by prohibiting littering and pet entry onto the course. By adhering to these guidelines, participants can enjoy a memorable cycling experience in one of America's most picturesque regions.
