The 4th Annual Paine Mountain Trail Races are set to challenge runners with two thrilling trail race options on September 27 at the Shaw Outdoor Center in Northfield, Vermont. The event offers both competitive and technical courses: the Anchor Challenge, a grueling 6k route that takes runners up to Norwich’s iconic “Anchor,” and the Paine Mountain Summit Race, an even more ambitious 7.5-mile trek through rugged terrain. The day also features free Youth races for young participants with exciting events like a 200-meter kiddo dash and a one-mile fun run. These family-friendly activities are designed to encourage the next generation of runners while raising funds for important community projects, including trail management in the Northfield Town Forest and support for Norwich University’s cross-country program. Registration is now open at three levels: early online registration costs $35 through September 13, later online registration runs until race day on September 27 with a fee of $40, while same-day entries are available from 8:30 to 10 am for $50. The first 100 registrants will receive either a commemorative Paine Mountain Trail Race coaster or T-shirt as an added bonus. The race day schedule kicks off at the Shaw Outdoor Center with bib pick-up starting at 8:30 in the morning, followed by the youth races beginning at 10:15. The main event starts promptly at 10 am when runners set out on their respective courses through Paine Mountain’s diverse landscapes. Both race routes begin and end at the Shaw Outdoor Center but diverge after a mile of single-track trail leading to Cheney Field, where the Summit Race splits off onto the Paine Mountain Trail. This challenging route ascends to the summit before descending back towards the Anchor area, rejoining the 6k course for its final leg through wooded trails. Participants can look forward to navigating varied terrain that includes steep climbs and technical sections, making these races a true test of endurance and skill. The scenery is equally impressive with views from Paine Mountain’s peak offering glimpses into Vermont's natural beauty and historical landmarks like the Anchor structure at the top of Norwich University's old ski slope. Race updates will be posted online as details are finalized, including information on sponsors, tee-shirt sales, awards, and giveaways. For more information or to register for these exhilarating trail races, visit the official event website or contact Michael McGrane, Head Cross Country Coach at Norwich University. This year’s Paine Mountain Trail Races promise an unforgettable experience for runners of all levels while supporting vital community initiatives in Northfield and beyond.
