Welcome to the annual Edge of Wilderness Ultra, set amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Northern Ontario. This unique ultra-marathon challenges participants with its rugged terrain and stunning natural beauty, making it an unforgettable experience for all runners.
The 2026 edition marks the fifth year of this event, which has grown into a beloved local tradition. The race will take place from August 1st to 3rd, taking advantage of Ontario's long weekend to offer participants extra time to push their limits and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
This ultra-marathon is designed for runners of all levels, with past editions seeing numerous first-time ultramarathoners achieving personal bests. The course offers a mix of challenging terrain – from rocky paths to forest trails – ensuring that every participant faces unique obstacles while enjoying breathtaking views of the wilderness.
The Edge of Wilderness Ultra holds significant prestige as it is an official affiliated race under the umbrella of Northern Trails Running Club, providing a platform for runners to qualify and compete in international events. Notably, past winners have gone on to represent their region at prestigious championships.
Registration fees support local initiatives, with proceeds donated to the Northwood Community Fund, helping to enhance the quality of life for residents through various community programs.
With only 67 spots available this year, early registration is highly recommended. The race will be held in the picturesque Edgeview Park, located just outside the charming town of Arva. Participants can explore the park's trails before the event or enjoy post-race recovery on its serene grounds.
The course spans approximately 10 kilometers and requires runners to complete two consecutive laps within an hour. This format ensures a dynamic experience, with participants never far from the start/finish area for support and encouragement.
On race day, setup will be permitted after 5 p.m. the evening before, but all runners must vacate by 7 p.m., ensuring smooth operations on race morning. The gates open at 6:30 a.m., followed by mandatory briefings at 6:40 a.m. for participants and crew.
Safety is paramount, with strict rules in place to ensure fair play. Each runner can bring one 10x10 canopy, subject to the respect of fellow competitors. Medical support will be available on-site should any emergencies arise.
The race day experience includes hot weather gear recommendations due to expected warm conditions. Participants are encouraged to prepare for variable elements such as cooler temperatures or rain. A barbecue area is provided for food preparation and there's limited access to electricity for boiling water, with no alcohol permitted onsite.
For those looking to extend their stay, camping facilities will be available on a first-come, first-served basis near the start/finish line. Eliminated runners are welcome to cheer from the sidelines while adhering to event rules.
Timing is not an issue; you'll know if you've completed your laps based on your return to race HQ within one hour of the start time. Swag and prizes await all participants, including a commemorative hoodie designed for comfort and bragging rights!
