Phoenix Phearsome Phour Ultra

About the Event

The Phoenix Phearsome Phour 70K Ultra is an exhilarating challenge that invites runners to explore the rugged beauty of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. This self-supported, unsupported ultra-distance run covers a staggering 43.8 miles (70.4 km) and includes over 11,312 feet of elevation gain as you traverse all four major summits in one continuous push: Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, and Shaw Butte.
The journey begins at the intersection of 36th Street and Pima Canyon Drive on February 20, 2027, with a start time set for 5:30 AM. The route is an out-and-back course that requires runners to complete eight total summit hits across the four peaks before returning via the same trail corridor used during the outbound leg.
The terrain varies dramatically from desert trails and exposed ridgelines to technical scrambling sections, offering both breathtaking views and challenging ascents. Each peak presents unique challenges: Camelback Mountain with its road approach leading into Echo Canyon; Piestewa Peak accessed through its east-side trailhead; North Mountain's out-and-back route over the summit; and Shaw Butte’s double summit turnaround.
While there are no official aid stations, 14 public water sources scattered along the course provide essential hydration points. It is crucial for participants to plan their route around these verified stops as they offer fountains, restrooms, ramadas, and in some cases, snacks and water available for purchase at varying hours.
The Phoenix Phearsome Phour 70K Ultra operates on a strict no-pacers policy, emphasizing self-reliance. Runners must carry all necessary gear and navigate the route independently using the official TCX file (Strava route #3504854829813372808) downloaded to their device before setting out.
The cool season from October through April offers optimal conditions for tackling this demanding course, with temperatures more manageable than during Phoenix's warmer months. However, the desert environment still poses significant risks such as heat stroke and dehydration, making thorough preparation essential.
Participants must acknowledge that running this distance in an unsupported format carries inherent dangers and is entirely at their own risk. No race officials or medical personnel are provided; runners must ensure they have a solid plan for navigation, hydration, nutrition, safety measures, and decision-making throughout the event.

This ultra-run is a testament to endurance and resilience in one of Arizona’s most stunning natural settings.
