PhoMo 50K: A Challenging Journey Through Phoenix Mountain Preserves
Join the third annual PhoMo 50K, set to challenge runners with its rugged terrain and scenic beauty within the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The race starts early on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 7:00 a.m., from the Shadow Rock Church parking lot located at 12861 N 8th Ave in Phoenix.
Runners will embark on an unmarked course but can rely on GPX coordinates available for their smartwatches or phones. The race route winds through rocky and technical trails, with approximately 5,500 feet of elevation gain scattered throughout the run. Participants should expect minimal shade along the way, making it essential to prepare for warm weather conditions.
The event is limited to just 50 runners who will have access to crew support at designated trailheads like Piestewa Peak TH and Dreamy Draw Trailhead. Pacers are permitted from Piestewa Peak TH onward, providing a strategic advantage as the course progresses through challenging terrain.
Aid stations will be set up in key locations such as the top parking lot of Piestewa Peak TH and at the ramada area near Dreamy Draw trailhead for both out-and-back sections. These areas also offer water fountains and restroom facilities, while runners should carry their own hydration and calories throughout most of the route due to sparse aid stations.
All participants will receive a commemorative PhoMo hat upon registration before December 23, 2026; late registrations won't be eligible for this swag. The race is held rain or shine with no refunds available in case of cancellation.
As part of your preparation, watch out for training runs announced on the Strava group page and mark your calendars for a packet pick-up and shake-out run scheduled for December 10 at a location to be determined.
The top male and female finishers will earn an exclusive prize: a free entry into next year’s Old Pueblo 50 miler, adding extra excitement to this already thrilling race.
