Pine Creek Challenge

Nestled in the heart of northern Pennsylvania's breathtaking landscape lies the Pine Creek Challenge, an exhilarating trail run along the renowned Pine Creek Rail Trail. This scenic route offers runners the chance to traverse through some of nature’s most awe-inspiring terrain.
The event takes place on a 25-mile out-and-back course that winds its way through the "Canyon" section of Pine Creek Gorge, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East. Spanning an impressive 47 miles and nearly a mile wide at points, this natural landmark plunges up to 1,450 feet deep into rugged beauty. The trail itself is crafted from fine crushed stone, providing a smooth surface that accommodates runners effortlessly with its generous width of 20 feet.
Participants can choose between several distance options: the grueling 100-mile race featuring four passes through the canyon; the challenging yet manageable 100-kilometer run offering one round trip to Blackwell and back; or the more moderate 50-mile option, which takes runners from Asaph to Tiadaghton and back. Marathoners will enjoy a course that showcases both the serene beauty of the area and its diverse wildlife.
The rail trail's gentle gradient ensures an enjoyable running experience without undue fatigue, dropping just 900 feet over its entire length for a barely perceptible grade. This makes it particularly welcoming to beginners who are eager to explore this natural wonderland at their own pace.
Runners will encounter the rich tapestry of life that inhabits Pine Creek Gorge: bald eagles soaring overhead, river otters swimming in the clear waters (a testament to successful conservation efforts), and a variety of other wildlife including deer, foxes, coyotes, and smaller creatures. The trail is also home to several horse-drawn wagons offering rides into the canyon, adding an element of historical charm.
The Pine Creek Challenge welcomes runners at different times on Saturday morning: 6 am for the 100-mile event, followed by the 100-kilometer race starting at 7 am. The marathoners and 50 milers will begin their journeys at 9 am and 8 am respectively. With a cutoff time of noon Sunday, runners have ample opportunity to soak in the scenery and push themselves against varying weather conditions.
