Nickel Preserve serves as the breathtaking backdrop for the sixteenth annual Pumpkin Holler Races scheduled to take place on October 18 and 19, 2026. This vast, privately conserved area spans a staggering 17,000 acres northeast of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, offering runners an unparalleled opportunity to explore its rugged terrain alongside the picturesque Illinois River.
The preserve is renowned for its diverse landscape featuring steep canyons and narrow ridges covered in oak-hickory forest, pine woodland, savanna, shrub land, and prairie. Participants will encounter gravel country roads punctuated by gentle climbs and descents, passing through grassy prairies dotted with oak and pine trees. The aid stations along the route are manned by experienced ultra-runners who understand the needs of long-distance athletes. On October 19th, runners will be joined by cyclists participating in the inaugural Pumpkin Holler Gravel Grinder event. Cyclists can choose from two distances: a single-loop ride covering 30 miles or a double loop for those up to the challenge of 60 miles. The more ambitious riders have the option to tackle an additional out-and-back stretch adding another 10 miles, making it a total of 70 miles.
Both running and cycling events offer finisher awards with top three spots in each distance category receiving special recognition.
