Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Ullswater and Martindale, nestled within the heart of the Lake District. This two-day hiking experience offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring autumn red deer rut, a natural spectacle that echoes through the valleys with the deep bellowing calls of stags. Day 1: Glenridding to Howtown The adventure begins on October 7th, as you board the Ullswater Steamers from Glenridding at 9:20am. The steamboat journey is weather-dependent; if it's not feasible due to high winds, a car transfer will take its place and transport participants directly to Howtown. From there, your path leads through lush grasslands towards St Martin’s Church in Martindale, where you’ll start ascending the valley slopes toward Dale Head. The terrain gradually becomes more challenging as you ascend Bedafell, but don’t worry; this is a leisurely hike designed for observation and enjoyment rather than speed. As you trek along, watch out for deer rutting activity around Boredale Hause, an area renowned for its dramatic autumn scenery. You’ll have the chance to witness stags bellowing from atop hillside vantage points before descending back to Glenridding via Patterdale by 3:30pm. Terrain and Distance The route covers approximately 12km with a total ascent of up to 650 meters, though this can vary based on weather conditions. The terrain is mostly easy fell walking but includes some boggy sections and rocky paths that require careful footing. Binoculars will enhance your viewing experience as you observe the deer rutting behavior. Day 2: Additional Exploration On October 8th, continue exploring additional areas of interest around Ullswater and Martindale if conditions permit. This day is optional but highly recommended for those who wish to deepen their immersion in this natural wonderland. Kit List To ensure your comfort and safety during the hike: - Waterproof hiking gear including jacket, trousers, boots or trail shoes - Warm layers such as a hat, gloves, spare midlayers - Essentials like food, water, and a headtorch (provided if needed) Catstycam Outdoor Store in Glenridding offers comprehensive advice on kit purchases for those who need to prepare. The store is also available for pre-ordering items that will be delivered at the start of your hike. Meeting Point Gather at the Glenridding Steamer Pier, CA11 0US, where car-sharing arrangements can be made with other participants if required. Join us this autumn and witness one of nature's most captivating displays in a setting as stunningly beautiful as the Lake District.
