Red Dirt Ultra

The Red Dirt Ultra returns to Provencal, Louisiana on February 20th, offering runners the chance to explore one of the most unique trail systems in Kisatchie National Forest. This event marks its eleventh edition with a focus on adventure and community spirit along the Sandstone and Caroline Dormon trails. Runners will experience rolling pine hills, sandy ridgelines, creek crossings, and remote stretches of forest that feel far removed from everyday life.
On race morning at dawn in February, runners can expect to find temperatures hovering around 10°C with a slight chill in the air due to overnight lows. The trail conditions are firm but slightly soft underfoot, making it essential for participants to choose appropriate footwear and attire. UV index levels will be moderate during midday, so sunscreen is advisable along with hydration strategies given that this race takes place over multiple hours.
The Red Dirt Ultra has built a reputation as a true runner's event, celebrated annually by ultra-runners who appreciate the challenging terrain of Kisatchie National Forest. Over its decade-long history, it has seen growing participation and strong support from local conservationists honoring Caroline Dormon’s legacy in establishing this protected area. The course venue winds through the heart of Kisatchie National Forest on multi-use backcountry routes shared by runners, ATV riders, and equestrians. The terrain includes loose sand, rocks, mud, water crossings, extended climbs, descents, and runnable sections beneath longleaf pines with occasional stretches alongside the Kisatchie Bayou. Aid stations are well-stocked and staffed by experienced ultrarunners who understand what it takes to support runners throughout their journey.
Weather conditions on race day will likely feature a temperature range from 5°C at dawn rising to around 13°C mid-morning, with moderate humidity levels and low wind speeds expected. The UV index during the afternoon races will remain in the 'moderate' category requiring participants to stay hydrated and protected against sun exposure.
The Red Dirt Ultra offers three distances: a new addition of 35K (~22 miles), the standard 50K (~33 miles with ~3,000 feet elevation gain), and an extended challenge at 100K (~66 miles). Each distance presents its own unique challenges and rewards.
