Reykjavik Spring Marathon

About the Event

The Reykjavik Spring Marathon, now entering its 28th year, marks the start of racing season in Iceland's capital. Held on the third Saturday of summer—typically between April 21st and 27th—the race offers a unique blend of Icelandic charm and scenic beauty. Though technically still spring by most standards, this event often enjoys sunny conditions that make for ideal running weather.
The marathon is celebrated as much for its community spirit as for its challenging course. Post-race festivities include warm waffles with real cream and jam, accompanied by coffee or other refreshments, creating a welcoming atmosphere where runners can unwind and connect with fellow participants and locals alike.
The route winds through the picturesque landscapes of Reykjavik, offering runners a rare opportunity to explore some of Iceland's most stunning natural formations. Starting in Elliðaárdalur valley, surrounded by 5,500-year-old lava fields and small fissures, the race begins at the banks of the historic Elliðaá river, one of Iceland’s premier salmon fishing spots.
From there, runners follow a trail that takes them to Fossvogur valley, just south of Reykjavik. As they approach Öskjuhlíð hill—once an island after the last ice age—the route veers inland before heading back towards the oceanfront. The course passes by Berjaya Hotel and continues past Nauthólshvídi beach, where geothermal activity heats the sand during summer months.
Runners are treated to breathtaking views of Snæfellsjökull glacier and Bessastaðir presidential residence across Faxaflói Bay. After 10.5 kilometers, a U-turn sends participants back along this stunning coastal path for another loop that completes the marathon distance. The route is mostly flat with minimal elevation changes and only two small street crossings each way.
This event isn’t just about running; it’s an invitation to experience Iceland's unique natural beauty and warm hospitality firsthand. Don't miss your chance to be part of something truly special in Reykjavik this spring.
The Reykjavik Autumn Marathon, held later in the year, mirrors many of these spectacular features while offering a different season's charm, continuing to celebrate the rich running culture that defines Iceland’s dynamic landscape and community spirit.
