Set against the picturesque backdrop of St John’s Chapel in Weardale, this navigation score event offers runners an engaging experience through the use of OS Explorer maps (1:25 000 scale). With easy access from Durham (a 50-minute drive), Newcastle and Darlington (both about one hour away), as well as Penrith (also a one-hour journey), participants can immerse themselves in the stunning landscapes surrounding St John’s Chapel. The event features three course options, each tailored to different levels of experience: a 60-minute route, a 90-minute option, and a more challenging 120-minute version. Using your smartphone with the MapRun app, you’ll navigate through public rights of way and open access land, aiming to visit as many checkpoints as possible within your chosen timeframe. This event is designed for all abilities, whether you’re an experienced navigator or new to the sport. Runners can choose their own pace—whether running, jogging, or walking—and enjoy a course that caters to various skill levels while offering breathtaking views and challenging terrain. Participants should note that dogs are not permitted at this event due to safety concerns and respect for local wildlife. Parking is available in the village and along the road to the east of St John’s Chapel; please park responsibly and considerately, keeping in mind the needs of nearby residents. Registration takes place from 10am onwards at Barrington Hall on the Village Green (DL13 1QB), where you can collect your map and any necessary gear. Start times are flexible between 10am and noon, allowing participants to plan their day accordingly. All courses must be completed by 2pm. To cap off a rewarding morning of navigation and exploration, enjoy cake and a hot drink upon finishing at the event venue. This delightful treat provides an excellent opportunity for runners to debrief on maps and routes with fellow competitors while sharing stories from the course. Don’t miss this chance to explore Weardale’s beauty through engaging outdoor adventure!
