The Salzburg Trailrunning Festival returns for its 13th edition as Austria's trail season finale from October 25th to 27th, 2024. Under the theme "Cityflair & Mountainair," runners will experience a unique perspective of Salzburg, blending urban charm with mountain vistas. Friday kicks off with a flat and scenic 5.5km night run along the Salzach River and through some of Salzburg's most enchanting gardens. This route offers an unforgettable nighttime view of the city’s historic center. Saturday brings more variety to the festival. Young trail runners can explore age-appropriate routes, introducing them to this exhilarating sport. In the afternoon, two challenging races await: the 6.4km Panoramatrail and the 13.0km Festungstrail. Both courses wind through Salzburg’s historic district with breathtaking views of Mönchsberg and Festungsberg. The Panoramatrail takes runners to Chapter Square after one lap, while the Festungstrail challenges participants with a steep ascent up to Hohensalzburg Fortress for its finish line following two laps. Sunday features the Trail Amadeus, combining the Festungstrail and Gaisbergtrail into an exhilarating pursuit race. Starting on Kapuzinerberg, runners tackle the 23.8km Gaisbergtrail, which includes a climb up to the summit of Gaisberg at 1,287 meters. Participants in the shorter Gaisbergrace event will finish their run atop Gaisbergspitze after covering 8.5 kilometers, while those opting for the full Gaisbergtrail continue downhill along Hellbrunner Allee before reaching Kappiterplatz as their final destination. For endurance enthusiasts, combining all three days results in a trail marathon of 42.4 kilometers with an elevation gain of 1,860 meters across night run and mountain trails alike. Experience Salzburg’s unique blend of city and mountain landscapes during this unforgettable event, where every step reveals new beauty and challenges for runners at various performance levels. The festival promises a mix of flat routes through the heart of Salzburg and steep climbs up to its iconic landmarks. Each trail offers not only physical challenge but also an immersive journey through one of Europe’s most culturally rich cities.

About Salzburg
Learn more about the host city, Salzburg.
Salzburg is a city in Austria, near the border with Germany's Bavaria state, with a population of 157,000 (2020). It was the setting for the 1965 movie The Sound of Music, so you may think you know all there is to see in Salzburg if you have seen the movie. Admittedly, it is difficult not to burst into song when you're walking along the Salzach River, or climbing up to the Hohensalzburg fortress, which looms over the city. But there is a lot more to this compact, courtly city than Julie Andrews and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born here.
