Big Hurt

About the Event

The Big Hurt is a dynamic multi-sport adventure that challenges athletes with four distinct legs, each offering unique terrain and exhilarating competition. Participants can choose between racing solo in the Iron Division or joining forces as part of a relay team for an unforgettable day on Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
From dawn until dusk, competitors will navigate through varied landscapes, starting with a 15-mile mountain bike ride that ventures into the foothills above Port Angeles before descending via road to the heart of downtown. The transition zone is conveniently located in this picturesque waterfront area where athletes can refuel and gear up for their next challenge.
Next comes a 2.6-mile kayak journey through the serene waters of Port Angeles Harbor, setting the stage for an intense 30-mile road bike ride that takes racers west out of town along scenic routes including Dan Kelly Road and Eden Valley Roads before returning to the race hub. The final leg is a 10K run on the Olympic Discovery Trail, providing runners with stunning views as they traverse this iconic waterfront path.
The event's central transition area transforms into an all-day celebration zone where racers can enjoy camaraderie among fellow competitors while taking advantage of amenities and support services provided by organizers. Spectators are also welcome to cheer along key sections of the route or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere at the downtown hub.
With categories ranging from solo Iron Division entries to team-based divisions like Regular, Masters (for those aged 50+), Tandem pairs, Company Teams, and High School groups, there’s a place for everyone looking to push their limits against diverse terrains and conditions.
Registration fees vary by division and time of year; early bird discounts are available until December 31st with standard pricing taking effect thereafter through September 25th when late registration begins.
In addition to the competitive spirit, The Big Hurt supports local conservation efforts through donations made to the Peninsula Trails Coalition, which focuses on building and maintaining trails across the region.
Racers should be aware of specific kayak requirements detailed by organizers and plan accordingly for equipment pick-up times after completing their respective legs.
For those interested in insider tips or course insights prior to race day, The Big Hurt Podcast offers valuable content from members of the organizing committee via various streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.
Participants are encouraged to register early if they wish to secure a t-shirt in their preferred size; changes cannot be made post September 1st. Transfer options for entries allow flexibility should plans change leading up to race day.
With its blend of challenging courses set against breathtaking natural settings, The Big Hurt promises an unforgettable experience for endurance enthusiasts and team players alike.
