SSOD race is held each year to help someone with medical or personal needs due to illness. Our running community is HUGE and this is a way to help those when they need a hand. This race requires incredible endurance and grit. If we could bottle that up and heal those that are sick then we'd probably never stop. But sadly it takes a lot more than that. 100% your registration ( minus costs) and donations from this event goes to a family that medical expenses are causing or will cause hardship. Words no one wants to hear echoed in the ears of Terry Clavel in February of 2014. “You have cancer”. Terry was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She and her husband, Steve, braced for what was to come. Along with a relentless fight, comes chemo, radiation, doctor visits, scans, surgery, blood work and so on. Not to mention the physical, mental, and financial impact it made on their life. But thankfully after treatment and some hardship, Terry was cancer free. A couple years following Terry’s recovery, Steve took up running. He was looking to drop some pounds (like 40) and become a healthier version of himself. Well, his journey led him to become a very accomplished runner, running distances up to 100miles. He also found friendships and a community like no other. Terry joined Steve for support, attended his events, and volunteered. After 10 years of being cancer free, those devastating words returned. “ You have cancer, again”. Terry is now terminal, being diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to her spine and pelvis. After exhausting options, the plan now is for comfort. The pain is debilitating and the fatigue is unbearable. Terry still has a little fight in her, but I feel we should step in and lend a little financial help to the Clavels’. No one does hard things like the running community so lets do this to make it a little easier for them. SSOD is back.
