On September 6, 2026, the SGV Lünen-Selm e.V. invites enthusiastic walkers to explore two scenic routes through the southern Münsterland region of Germany. The longer route spans approximately 47 kilometers and begins at Bürgerhaus near Burg Botzlar in Selm before taking visitors on a journey past several historic landmarks. The first section of this long-distance walk leads participants from Selm to Nordkirchen, where they will encounter the baroque water castle known as Westfälisches Versailles. After about 20 kilometers, walkers pass through the Cappenberger Forest—the largest contiguous forest in Münsterland—before reaching Schloss Cappenberg with its picturesque Stiftskirche. The final destination for both routes is Selm's SGV-Wanderhütte, nestled within a large FFH protected area. This resting spot offers refreshments and respite before the journey concludes at Bürgerhaus near Burg Botzlar in Selm. The shorter route measures around 26 kilometers and focuses primarily on Nordkirchen’s baroque water castle. Both routes offer challenging terrain with approximately 150 meters of elevation gain, making them suitable for experienced walkers aged sixteen or older (shorter route) and eighteen or older (longer route). Along the way, participants can enjoy multiple refreshment stations providing drinks, snacks, and even a warm meal at Schloss Westerwinkel. These stops are also equipped with toilet facilities. For those looking to explore without committing to such lengthy distances, there is an alternative 13-kilometer walk that does not include visits to the castles but still offers rest points in the SGV-Wanderhütte and access for accompanying family members aged twelve or older. All routes start from Willy-Brandt-Platz 2, Selm. The event organizers recommend a walking pace of between four and six kilometers per hour due to the distance between refreshment stations. Participants must adhere strictly to road traffic rules as these paths are not closed off to vehicular traffic. Support services such as medical assistance from the Red Cross and shuttle service for those unable to complete their route will be available throughout the day, along with designated help contacts provided at registration. The event is subject to cancellation in case of extreme weather conditions but offers no refund policy under these circumstances. Registration takes place on Willy-Brandt-Platz 2 from where participants start their journey between 8:00 and 9:30 AM depending on the route chosen, with staggered starts for each distance. Detailed maps will be provided to all registered walkers ahead of time via Komoot or GPX files if email addresses are available. This event promises a unique blend of cultural discovery and physical challenge amidst breathtaking landscapes in one of Germany’s most charming regions.
