Settle Saunter

The Saunter is an annual walking or running event that invites participants to explore some of Yorkshire Dales' quieter and lesser-known areas. Organized by The Rotary Club of Settle with support from local volunteers, the event not only offers scenic routes but also raises funds for various charitable causes such as Fell Rescue, Victoria Hall in Settle, and a Health Education Project in Nepal.
Participants can choose among three different routes tailored to varying levels of fitness and experience. All paths wind through picturesque rural villages and hamlets, with some sections leading over the lower fells near the market town of Settle. The terrain is manageable for both walking and running, marked clearly by tape along the way, ensuring a safe and navigable course.
For those bringing their canine companions, dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead throughout the event to maintain safety and harmony with other participants. Detailed route descriptions and maps can be downloaded from the official website ahead of time for better preparation.
The use of SPORTident timing systems ensures precise recording of each participant's progress along the flagged routes. The longer courses will start first, followed by staggered starts for shorter distances to prevent congestion on popular sections. This approach allows runners and walkers to enjoy a more relaxed pace through the scenic countryside at their own speed.
A café located in the garden area near the event center will be open throughout the day, offering refreshments such as snacks and drinks to keep participants energized during their journey. Under 13s are welcome on two of the shorter routes but must adhere to specific safety guidelines, including being accompanied by a parent at all times.
Past editions have successfully raised money for notable causes like Cancer Research, Clapham Cave and Fell Rescue, Alzheimer’s Society, and rebuilding efforts following an earthquake in Nepal. This year promises another opportunity to support these vital initiatives while enjoying the beauty of Yorkshire Dales.
