Experience an unforgettable ride through the breathtaking landscapes of Mohonk Preserve! The 2026 Shawangunk Grit Ride offers two challenging courses, each designed to test your skills and endurance. The longer route spans 50.4 miles with a significant elevation gain of 4,711 feet, while the shorter course covers 23 miles and ascends 1,811 feet. Both routes begin at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz, NY, before venturing into the heart of Mohonk Preserve. The majority of the ride is on historic carriage roads—over 98% gravel—that wind through diverse terrain offering a mix of technical sections and scenic views. Participants can expect some rough and steep stretches, particularly during descents where loose rock might pose challenges. This event is more than just a ride; it’s an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause. By registering, you’ll be supporting Mohonk Preserve's mission to protect the natural beauty of the northern Shawangunk Mountains region and provide educational programs for children. Your participation will help maintain and repair these historic carriage roads while also fighting invasive species. Fuel your journey with well-stocked aid stations offering water, Skratch hydration products, energy bars, bananas, and other snacks. Upon completion, enjoy a post-ride party complete with food, live music, and beverages at the finish line. Helmets are mandatory for safety reasons, but remember to bring along some extra essentials like a spare tube, tools, and a pump as mechanical support will not be available on course. The ride commences in two waves: 50.4-mile riders start at 8:30 am, while the 23-milers set off half an hour later at 9:30 am. A pace car leads for the first couple of miles before releasing you to explore the unique terrain on your own terms. While this is not a competitive race, there are opportunities to raise funds and earn rewards. Participants who achieve certain fundraising goals will receive a Grit pullover hoodie or other incentives from sponsors. Additionally, Strava users can participate in timed segments for extra excitement. Safety guidelines emphasize sharing the trails with hikers and climbers; therefore, bike bells are highly recommended to ensure courteous passage. The event takes place after daylight savings time ends, so plan accordingly as the sun sets early at 4:44 pm on that day. Pricing remains stable for both distances: - $150 for the 50.4-mile route - $125 for the 23-mile course Packet pickup options are available to ensure a smooth start, with convenient times and locations provided: - Friday, November 6, 2026: Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center from noon to 5 pm. - Saturday, November 7, 2026: Ulster County Fairgrounds starting at 7 am for both distances.
