Short But Sweet 5k

About the Event

The Short But Sweet 5k returns to Chatham, Massachusetts on August 8th, 2026. This event is a beloved charity fun run benefiting the Monomoy Schools Cross-Country and Track & Field programs, celebrating its fifth year of running through scenic trails.
Race morning finds runners at Our Lady of Grace parking lot, where the old colony rail trail offers a short but sweet out-and-back course. The route winds along the peaceful path, providing a mix of smooth terrain that invites steady pacing throughout the five kilometers.
This event has become an integral part of Chatham's summer calendar, drawing participants from near and far to support local youth sports initiatives. In 2015, it began as a small community effort; by its fourth year in 2025, over three hundred runners had joined, raising significant funds for essential athletic programs.
The course venue is the Old Colony Rail Trail, an easy yet challenging five-kilometer out-and-back route that showcases Chatham's natural beauty. The trail conditions are hard and dry, ensuring a consistent run despite potential summer heat. Elevation changes are minimal, with only slight inclines providing some variety in terrain. Aid stations will be available at strategic intervals along the course to keep runners hydrated.
The start of the race is marked by the sound of the starting gun fired from Our Lady of Grace parking lot, and the finish line is just as welcoming, with participants finishing near the same location. The course boasts a gentle slope that gradually increases in elevation before descending back towards the start area. There are no significant obstacles or features to note; it’s a straightforward path well-suited for both seasoned runners and those looking for an enjoyable family-friendly event.
The weather on race day is expected to be mild, with temperatures ranging from 18.5°C to 23.4°C (65°F to 74°F), feeling comfortable despite the humidity at around 79.9%. The trail will likely feel dry and hard underfoot, making for a fast-paced course but beware of potential sun exposure as UV levels are high.
