Nestled in the heart of Marple, near Stockport, the Signpost Challenge Hike returns for its third year, offering hikers and runners an exhilarating journey through some of England’s most captivating landscapes. This event is organized by South Manchester LDWA and invites participants to explore a mix of rugged terrain and charming villages. The hike features two challenging routes: a longer 24-mile trek with over 4,300 feet of elevation gain or a shorter 17-mile route that climbs nearly 3,000 feet. Both courses are designed for those who enjoy the beauty of nature while testing their physical limits within a ten-hour timeframe. The long-distance course winds through picturesque villages like Hayfield and ascends to iconic landmarks such as Werneth Low, Cown Edge, Lantern Pike, and Chinley Churn in the High Peak region. If conditions permit, hikers will be treated to panoramic views of Manchester, the South Pennines, and parts of the Peak District. Along the way, participants must spot distinctive green PNFS footpath signs that pepper the route. The shorter course offers a similar blend of scenic beauty but with less mileage and elevation gain. Both routes pass through areas rich in industrial heritage, providing insights into England’s past alongside breathtaking natural scenery. The long route also includes an exciting passage over New Mills’ Millennium Walkway, adding another layer to its unique character. Participants will encounter three outdoor checkpoints along both courses, complemented by one indoor checkpoint where they can rest and refuel with a variety of drinks and snacks. For the longer course, this indoor stop is at Hayfield’s Scout Hut, while runners on the shorter route will enjoy refreshments at Rowarth's Children's Inn. The event begins and concludes at Marple Senior Citizens Hall in Memorial Park Drive (SK6 6BA), where registration starts at 7:00 AM with a start time of 8:00 AM for walkers and 9:00 AM for runners. All participants must finish by 18:00. Parking is available on Chadwick Street and Hollins Lane, but due to ongoing construction in Memorial Park, drivers are advised not to park there. Car-sharing is encouraged to minimize environmental impact and ease parking logistics. Entry fees cover a range of amenities including tea, coffee, pastries at the start line, snacks and drinks along the route, and a hot meal upon completion. All finishers will receive a certificate commemorating their achievement. Please note that dogs are not permitted for safety reasons during this event. Join us in Marple to experience the thrill of hiking through some of England’s most beautiful landscapes while enjoying camaraderie with fellow adventurers. For those seeking an unforgettable day out, the Signpost Challenge Hike promises a blend of physical challenge and scenic beauty that is hard to match.
