The event begins at dusk when the lamplighters appear, signaling your departure from Goathland Village Hall towards Triangulation Pillars and other checkpoints scattered along the route. Your adventure will take you across varied terrain including well-marked tracks, open moorlands, and dense forestry. With a tracker in hand and detailed GPX files to guide navigation, participants have 6.5 hours to complete this nocturnal challenge.
Refreshments await at two checkpoint locations, providing much-needed sustenance as the night progresses. Hot food options will be available upon your return to Goathland Village Hall, ensuring you can refuel after crossing the finish line and collecting a prestigious Lamplighter medal.
The race honors a storied tradition of lamplighters who have illuminated paths through Yorkshire's darkened landscapes for centuries. As part of this legacy, entrants are required to carry specific mandatory kit items that will be checked at one of the checkpoints along your route.
