Snakebite

The Snakebite 10k/20k returns to McDowell Mountain Regional Park near Fountain Hills, Arizona on February 28th, offering runners a challenging yet scenic course through the desert landscape.
On race morning, participants will gather at the park’s trailheads just before dawn. The air is crisp with an early winter chill typical for mid-February in this part of Arizona. As runners lace up and stretch out along the McDowell Mountain trails, they’ll be greeted by the golden hues of sunrise casting long shadows across the rocky terrain. Volunteers are on hand to direct traffic and provide aid at various points throughout the course.
Snakebite has been a staple event since its inception in 2016, drawing runners from all over Arizona who come for both the competition and camaraderie. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most anticipated races in Fountain Hills, with hundreds participating annually. The race supports local conservation efforts by raising funds to maintain trails within McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Runners contribute not just through entry fees but also during post-race food and beverage sales.
The course for Snakebite is almost entirely on trails within McDowell Mountain Regional Park, a sprawling 30 square miles of desert wilderness less than an hour’s drive from Phoenix. The terrain features gentle rolling hills with stretches of flat ground winding along the park's scenic paths. Runners will encounter some loose sand and rocky sections that can be challenging but rewarding for those who enjoy trail running.
Weather conditions on race day typically feature firm yet slightly soft trails, making them ideal for quick footwork without excessive fatigue from hard surfaces. UV index is expected to be moderate at 3.0, which means sunscreen application before the event could prevent sunburns later in the morning as temperatures rise during peak daylight hours. Morning lows will hover around freezing while afternoon highs are likely to reach into the high teens Celsius.
