Steaming to the Coast

Steaming to the Coast returns in 2026, offering trail runners an unforgettable journey through West Somerset’s picturesque landscapes via the longest standard gauge steam railway line in the UK. This unique race features three challenging distances: 11 kilometers, 11 miles, and a full marathon.
The event begins with entrants boarding the historic train at Minehead station, traveling along the scenic coast to Bishops Lydeard, nestled at the base of the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Marathon runners will disembark here and set off on their trail run back towards Minehead, while 11-mile and 11-kilometer participants continue by train before starting their runs from Williton or Washford.
The marathon route offers breathtaking views along the Ridgeline of the Quantock Hills, dropping down to coastal paths that follow sections of both the Steam Coast Trail and England Coast Path. The shorter distances provide a similar experience but with less mileage, allowing runners to enjoy stunning scenery without committing to the full marathon distance.
Thanks to its popularity in previous years, organizers have added a second train for 2026, ensuring more participants can join this scenic adventure. Previous editions sold out rapidly, so early registration is recommended to secure your spot on what promises to be an epic challenge through one of Britain’s most beautiful regions.
Upon crossing the finish line outside Minehead Station, runners will find themselves in a charming coastal town known as the gateway to Exmoor National Park. There’s no better way to celebrate than with some traditional fish and chips washed down by Somerset cider at local eateries.
