Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 11, 2026, as the American River Canyon transforms into a vibrant setting for the Sunset & Cider Trail Races. Nestled in Auburn, California, this race offers three distinct challenges: a grueling yet scenic 50K, a half marathon that showcases stunning vistas and challenging terrain, and a family-friendly 5-mile run perfect for all levels of runners. The 50K route winds through the American River Canyon with two out-and-back segments along smooth river sections. With an elevation gain totaling 3760 feet, this course features mostly runnable trails and single-track paths, interspersed with brief stretches on neighborhood roads. Aid stations are strategically placed at miles 3.8, 10.5, 17.0, 20.9, and 25.6 to keep runners fueled throughout the day until a time limit of 7:00 PM. For those looking for a more moderate challenge, the half marathon offers two out-and-back loops with an elevation gain of 1890 feet. This course maintains the scenic beauty of the canyon while offering runnable trails and single-track paths. Aid stations are located at miles 3.8, 4.8, and 8.7 to provide essential hydration and sustenance throughout the run. The 5-mile event is a shorter but equally rewarding experience for those seeking an introduction to trail running or a leisurely jog through picturesque terrain. With an elevation gain of just over half that of the half marathon course, this route follows initial sections of both longer races before turning back towards the finish line at Ponderosa Cider Company. Post-race festivities will take place at Ponderosa Cider Co., where all participants are treated to two complimentary cider pours and a custom Sunset & Cider trail hat. Additionally, each runner receives a commemorative 16oz cider glass as part of their swag package. The first 200 registrants also receive a free BOCO trail running hat. In recognition of the importance of community support for local nonprofits facing federal aid cuts, the Unity Initiative has been established to encourage donations through race registration. Participants who donate can earn future race discounts and have their contributions matched by up to $40 or 25% of their entry fee. This initiative supports critical organizations like Placer Food Bank, Sacramento Food Bank & Rescue Mission, Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA), AcademySTAY, Sierra Club California, Placer Land Trust, and the American Civil Liberties Union. Join us in Auburn to experience breathtaking views, challenging trails, and a vibrant community spirit. Whether you're aiming for personal bests or simply enjoying the scenic beauty of Northern California's outdoors, this event promises an unforgettable day out on the trail.
