Swanzey Covered Bridges Half-Marathon, Elijah's Race

Swanzey Covered Bridges Half-Marathon, Elijah's Race returns to Swanzey in New Hampshire on September 6th, continuing the tradition of honoring its founder and supporting Monadnock Regional Middle-High School. The race course is a testament to the quaint charm of rural New England, rising between 300-400 feet in elevation throughout, offering views that capture the essence of pre-Civil War covered bridges like Thompson, Carlton, and Cresson. This scenic route weaves through historic landmarks, providing not just a challenging race but an immersive experience into Swanzey's rich heritage.
The atmosphere on race morning is crisp and inviting with temperatures averaging 17.2°C, feeling much the same due to low humidity at around 77%. The course begins in downtown Swanzey, heading west towards the covered bridges that date back centuries before the war years. Participants can expect a mix of dirt paths and well-maintained roads, ensuring a smooth yet demanding journey for all runners.
The race is run each year as an annual memorial to Elijah Barrett, who founded it to benefit MRMHS students. This event has grown from its roots into one that draws over 200 participants annually, with the Swanzey Covered Bridges Half-Marathon serving not only as a personal challenge but also as a community gathering.
The course venue features several notable route elements: the half-marathon path winds through diverse terrain, offering both flat stretches and slight inclines. It passes by multiple historic covered bridges, each with its own unique story to tell. The race starts at Swanzey High School, where participants can access locker rooms and a couple of porta-potties before heading out onto the course.
The finish line is also located back at the high school, providing easy access for post-race festivities which include a barbeque and raffle prizes. Cash awards are given to top three male and female runners, adding an extra layer of motivation on race day.
