SWIM DERWENT returns on Sunday, July 4th, 2027, to the stunning Derwent Reservoir near Consett. Organized by Castle Triathlon Club of Prudhoe and Northumbrian Water, this beloved open water swimming event offers a perfect blend of safety and scenery for swimmers at all levels. Derwent Reservoir, nestled on the border between Durham and Northumberland, provides an idyllic setting with its tranquil waters stretching across a picturesque landscape. Swimmers will have the rare chance to take part in what promises to be a memorable dip from the south shore of this magnificent reservoir. The event caters to both novices dipping their toes into open water swimming as well as seasoned swimmers chasing distance goals. Safety is paramount, with full coverage including boats and first aid stations ensuring participants are supported throughout the day. Participants can choose from several distances: 400m, half-mile, one mile, two miles, or three miles. The shorter routes will be marked for guidance while longer distances involve multiple laps; however, this may change based on water conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Start times are expected between 9:00am and 10:00am with exact timings announced closer to the event date. Swimmers can opt not to wear wetsuits if they prefer, but these are highly recommended by organizers due to their comfort and buoyancy benefits—especially for less experienced swimmers. If swimming without a wetsuit, it’s mandatory to use a tow float. Timing services will be provided by Timing Up North with live chip timing ensuring accurate results throughout the day. Upon completion of your swim, you’ll receive a bespoke event medal alongside Wild Deer merchandise and refreshments at the finish line area. Parking is available for participants at Derwent Waterside Park, located approximately 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the reservoir’s edge; there's a charge of £3 per vehicle.
