Tahqua Trail Run

Tahqua Trail Run invites runners to explore the pristine wilderness of eastern Lake Superior along the Tahquamenon River, where nature’s beauty is both rugged and serene. The race begins on the Tahqua Trail, 4.3 miles west of Whitefish Bay, setting off down a dirt forest road that hugs the river for about one quarter mile before merging with the North Country Trail (NCT).
The NCT winds through diverse landscapes, including spruce swales, pine ridges, and lush bogs, offering glimpses into Jack Pine savannahs. The trail leads runners past Camp 10 and Water Tank lakes where moose sightings are not uncommon. After nine and a half miles of winding paths, the course reaches Lower Tahquamenon Falls, marking an awe-inspiring transition from single track to heavily forested trails.
One mile further along these lush trails, the race merges with the River Trail, skirting alongside the thundering waters of the Tahquamenon. This section features towering old growth hemlock and yellow birch trees that provide a canopy over the trail. The roar of Upper Tahquamenon Falls grows louder as runners near their finish line, encouraging them to push for one final sprint at this iconic location.
For 2026, Great Lakes Endurance introduces a new 50K distance starting from the Tahquamenon Falls parking lot and featuring an out-and-back route of the classic 25K course. This extended journey through Michigan’s wilds offers even more opportunities to immerse in the natural beauty and challenge oneself against varied terrain.
