The Taunton Flyer Sportive returns this year as the season opener at Smeatharpe Airfield, just outside Honiton. This beloved cycling event raises funds for SSAFA, an Armed Forces Charity, and takes cyclists through historic wartime airfields in East Devon and Somerset. Riders will pedal past landmarks like RAF Exeter, RAF Dunkeswell, RAF Upottery, RAF Culmhead, RAF Merryfield, and RAF Westonzoyland, each site steeped in the region's rich aviation history. The event offers three distinct routes to cater to all levels of cyclists: the Spitfire (37 miles), Dakota (63 miles), and Wellington (101 miles). Cyclists can expect a mix of tranquil flat roads and exhilarating climbs throughout the picturesque Blackdown Hills. Each route is meticulously marked, ensuring riders stay on course with ease. Supportive facilities are abundant along all routes, providing cyclists with feed stations stocked with energy-boosting snacks and refreshments. Outriders guide participants safely through traffic-heavy sections while mechanics and medics stand by to offer assistance whenever needed. Cyclists will also benefit from electronic chip timing at the start and finish lines, ensuring an accurate record of their journey. Upon crossing the finish line, all riders are awarded a commemorative medal, celebrating both their achievement and support for SSAFA's vital work with military personnel and veterans in need. The Taunton Flyer Sportive promises not only a challenging ride but also a memorable experience steeped in history and community spirit.
