Thames Ring Series

About the Event

The Thames Ring series, set along the picturesque waterways of England, offers an unparalleled challenge for endurance runners seeking to test their limits against nature's serene backdrop. Scheduled from April 21st to 25th, this year’s edition features three distinct race distances: a grueling full marathon at 256 miles, a half-marathon covering approximately 158 miles, and a shorter yet demanding 98-mile course.
The event begins in Streatley-on-Thames, where runners embark on an anti-clockwise loop along the Thames River and its connecting canals. The route is predominantly flat but far from straightforward, weaving through rural towpaths that wind around tranquil villages and bustling urban areas alike. Despite the relative ease of elevation, this race demands mental fortitude as much as physical prowess; with average completion rates under 50%, it’s clear that endurance and strategic navigation are key.
The full Thames Ring (256 miles) challenges participants to complete their journey within a staggering 100 hours, starting at 10am on Wednesday. Runners in the shorter but equally formidable half-marathon (158 miles) have just over two days to reach their goal by Friday evening's cutoff of 3pm. Meanwhile, those tackling the 98-mile course must finish within a more manageable yet still daunting timeframe of 34 hours, concluding at Saturday night.
Each race is meticulously supported with strategically placed checkpoints roughly every 25 miles, providing essential services such as medical aid and resupply stations where runners can restock on food and water. Drop bags are permitted to ensure that participants have access to necessary supplies throughout their journey; however, strict rules govern the size (up to 15kg) and handling of these items.
The race pack offers detailed maps and GPX files for navigation, which should be downloaded in advance or ordered as waterproof versions upon registration. These resources are crucial for successful route planning and execution, especially during dark nights when visibility is low.
Registration fees vary based on distance: £375 for the full marathon, £200 for the half-marathon, and £150 for the shorter course. Early bird discounts incentivize early entry, helping to secure venues well in advance at a more favorable rate.
The Thames Ring series promises an unforgettable adventure through England's historic waterways, blending breathtaking scenery with rigorous competition. It’s not just about reaching the finish line; it’s about navigating one of Europe’s longest non-stop races and emerging from the challenge as both physically and mentally transformed runners.
Participants can look forward to a range of amenities along their journey, including sleeping tents after 75 miles for those undertaking the longer routes. Checkpoints offer hot meals and beverages to sustain energy levels throughout this epic endeavor.
As with any endurance event, self-sufficiency is paramount; outside support beyond designated checkpoints is strictly prohibited unless provided by official staff members at CPs. This rule ensures fairness among competitors who must rely solely on their preparedness for the entire duration of the race.
The Thames Ring series invites runners to immerse themselves in a unique blend of natural beauty and athletic challenge, making it an event not to be missed for serious trail enthusiasts.
