Nestled off Ireland's southern coast, Cape Clear Island—known locally as Inis Cleire—is a tranquil haven where the Irish language thrives and daily life is intertwined with nature. With a population of around 130 residents, this Gaeltacht island boasts an unspoiled environment rich in fishing traditions, farming practices, arts and crafts, lavender production, goat farming, and even distilling at its renowned Cape Clear Distillery. The island's landscape offers breathtaking views across Roaringwater Bay to Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, just 6 kilometers westward. Spectacular vistas also extend eastwards towards Sherkin Island and the mainland, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and trail runners alike. The trails here are not only scenic but also steeped in history. For those seeking an unforgettable running experience, Cape Clear Island hosts its unique CAPE CLEAR ISLAND RACES event with both Half Marathon and 10km options to choose from. These races take place along rarely-used Fuschia-lined lanes and through the island’s extensive hiking trails, providing a challenging yet rewarding course that showcases the beauty of West Cork. Participants have two transportation choices: either join the chartered RaceBoat service departing from Baltimore harbour for an all-inclusive adventure or arrange their own transport to be on the island in time for the start. Keep in mind that the scheduled 10:45am ferry will not arrive at Cape Clear Island early enough for participants aiming to catch the race. The provisional start times are set as follows: - Half Marathon: 11:30 am - 10km: 12:15 pm To ensure smooth logistics, half marathon runners should board the first ferry at 9am and those competing in the shorter distance can depart on the 10am ferry. For added peace of mind, participants have the option to purchase XCover insurance. This allows for a refund if unforeseen circumstances prevent them from attending the event. This race is more than just a competition; it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in Cape Clear Island’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Join us on this remarkable journey through West Cork, where every step reveals new wonders around each corner.
