The Dorset Downland Challenge is set to open for registration on Sunday, November 1st, 2026, offering runners the choice of either a challenging 30-mile trek or a slightly more manageable 20-mile journey. Both routes are designed to be completed within an 11-hour window, providing ample time for participants to soak in the stunning landscapes and historic sites along the way. The adventure begins at Cerne Abbas, home to the iconic Cerne Giant hill figure, before venturing into Dorset's picturesque downland and river valleys. The longer route takes runners through Alton Pancras, Lyscombe Chapel, Bingham’s Melcombe, the Dorsetshire Gap, Buckland Newton, and Sydling St Nicholas, each offering unique views and historical charm. Participants will start from Cerne Abbas Village Hall (GR ST664014), where parking is available approximately 600 meters away. Runners are encouraged to carpool due to limited space at the event site. A rolling start between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM allows for a staggered pace, with all runners aiming not to arrive at checkpoint one (CP1) before it opens at 9:30 AM. The route features three checkpoints on the longer course and two on the shorter option. These CPs provide essential hydration stations along with light snacks and meals upon arrival at the finish line for those who complete their respective routes within the time limit of 7:00 PM. Runners are advised to bring reusable mugs as no disposable cups will be provided at checkpoints, aligning with sustainability efforts. Special dietary needs beyond vegetarian requirements should be planned ahead by carrying personal provisions. Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted for this event due to safety and logistical concerns. All finishers receive a certificate commemorating their achievement in the Dorset Downland Challenge. Entries must be secured online before November 1st as no on-site registration will be available. With a limited capacity of 180 participants, early sign-up is recommended to secure your spot among this exclusive group of adventurers. This event promises an immersive experience through some of England's most captivating rural landscapes, making it ideal for both seasoned runners and those looking to explore the beauty of Dorset’s lesser-known gems.
